Anthropocene

Anthropocene

I’ve been pondering the Anthropocene since my geology college days. Having seen the geological evidence of how other ages mass have dramatically changed, I wondered how we will fare. In Anthropocene, on the TED Radio Hour, noted thinkers do a little pondering of their own. It’s entertaining and well worth a listen if the Anthropocene has crossed your mind. -dBguy

Friend is Back

Friend is Back

Great news. I just saw Friend! What a welcome sight. She wandered out of the woods across the street from us. Headed past my driveway. Stopped. Starred. Took a few more steps toward the vacant lot next to us. Stopped. Starred again. Craned her neck. Paused as if in shock. And, after a few moments, headed back towards the woods. That small plot of paradise, […]

Razed Paradise and Put in a Residential Lot

Razed Paradise and Put in a Residential Lot

The Lot After a little paradise was lost, I needed time to recover from shock, before writing this. Now, looking out my office window, I’m surprised at just how harsh it is. the flat, rilled sand looks just like the mine tailings piles I helped create and then reclaim in the 70’s(karma?) like the tailings piles, there’s not a living thing there now the reflected heat and […]

Wildlife in My Backyard

Wildlife in My Backyard

Bobcat It’s hard to believe but our little home, in the city, is surrounded by wildlife. A Bobcat enjoys lounging beneath the Cassava. Today is the second time he’s been seen there. They are shy. And disappear at the slightest hint of human intrusion. I suspect he’s been around longer than he’s been seen. A half a dozen squirrels commonly spend the day fighting over […]

Painted Buntings Are Back

Painted Buntings Are Back

What beautiful birds. The male is stunning. The female, though plain by contrast, is still striking. They winter here in Florida which means that it must be winter. With everything still blooming tomato transplants growing okra springing up It’s kind of hard for a old Wyoming boy to keep track. Maybe I’m easily confused in this heat? 🙂

Gopher Tortoise

Gopher Tortoise

After relocating to Florida a year ago, we bought a house. And our first visitor was Friend. That’s the name we’ve given to a Gopher Tortoise whose land we share. Gopher Tortoises are a threatened species and protected in Florida. Friend grazes in our yard. And amiably tolerated our conversation until, while napping in the car’s shade, I moved him aside for his safety. After […]

Blue Land Crabs

Blue Land Crabs

Coming home from work, my wife saw several Blue Land Crabs on the road. Their migration and mating season has begun. They’re beautiful. And watching them is just neat! -dBguy

Animal Noise – Really?

Animal Noise – Really?

Bees have a complex communication system which we beekeepers often marvel at. But they’re not the only creatures who can chat it up. Ever listened to prairie dogs? If you’ve spent some time out west, I’ll bet you’ve heard their bark. Here’s a neat Radiolab Short concerning animal communication. In nature, things are not often as simple as they seem, even the prairie dog’s yelp. […]
