After relocating to Florida a year ago, we bought a house. And our first visitor was Friend. That’s the name we’ve given to a Gopher Tortoise whose land we share. Gopher Tortoises are a threatened species and protected in Florida.
Friend grazes in our yard. And amiably tolerated our conversation until, while napping in the car’s shade, I moved him aside for his safety.
After that, he flees when he sees or hears me. It’s surprising how fast he can move. And how, a year later, he still remembers who I am.
Apparently he’s still on good terms with my wife, whose voice and presence he’s still quite content with. They haven’t survived by being forgetful. And for a creature once known as the Hoover Chicken, that’s a good thing.
